Product Hunt Launch Video vs. Demo Video: Why They're Not the Same Thing

Every Product Hunt launch page has two videos fighting for the same real estate: the one that's supposed to make a stranger click, and the one that's supposed to convince them to sign up once they have. Most teams shoot one video and ask it to do both jobs. It's why so many launch videos feel like a demo with faster music: technically correct, emotionally flat.

The job of a launch video is attention. The job of a demo is belief.

A Product Hunt launch video has about three seconds before someone scrolls past it. It doesn't need to explain your product; it needs to make someone curious enough to click through. That means hook-first pacing, a hero mechanic repeated as a visual motif, camera movement that never sits still, and a runtime under a minute. It's a trailer, not a tutorial.

A demo video does the opposite job. Someone already clicked. Now they're deciding whether to trust you with five minutes of their day. A demo needs to slow down, show the real interface, and let a feature actually resolve on screen instead of cutting away from it. Rushing a demo to "trailer speed" just makes people feel like something's being hidden.

Why one video can't do both

Trailer pacing kills trust: if every cut happens before a feature finishes doing its thing, a skeptical viewer reads it as "there's nothing here to actually show." Demo pacing kills attention: a slow, methodical walkthrough in the first three seconds of a launch page reads as "boring," and nobody sticks around to find out otherwise. These aren't stylistic choices. They're structurally opposed goals, which is why treating them as the same deliverable produces a video that's mediocre at both jobs.

How Poko treats this as two different builds, not two edits of the same one

This is the part most teams don't have tooling for, so we built it in. Poko Motion has two separate style presets under the hood, not one flexible template.

• Motion ad: a high-kinetic trailer, about 40 to 45 seconds, with fast beats and kinetic type. Hook-first structure, continuous camera motion with a build-travel-read-resolve arc on every scene, and a named hero mechanic that repeats as a visual through-line. Best for launches and social ads. This is the Product Hunt launch video — if you need one fast, here's how to build a Product Hunt launch video in under 10 minutes.
• Product walkthrough: a guided feature tour, about 60 seconds, with continuous UI motion. Structured around real product UI or your own screen recording as the backbone, with narration and captions synced to what's actually happening on screen. Best for onboarding and explainers. This is the video that goes on your landing page or in the comments once someone's clicked through — for a fuller definition of the format, see what a product demo video actually is, and why it beats a PDF.

You pick the style up front, before you send your first message. The AI then follows it for pacing, layout variety, and animation for the rest of the build. Both styles pull from the same source: your repo, a landing page URL, a PDF or deck, or a raw screen recording you already have. That means you're not maintaining two separate scripts or re-explaining your product twice.

Rendering happens locally, not in a shared cloud queue, and Poko can run multiple video builds side by side. That means you can finish both the launch trailer and the full demo in the same afternoon you'd otherwise spend scripting just one of them. The launch-day checklist item, "do we have a hero video and a proof video," gets checked off for real, instead of one video pulling double duty.

The takeaway

If your Product Hunt launch page only has one video, ask which job it's doing. If it's paced like a trailer, put a real demo next to it for the people who click through. If it's paced like a demo, it's probably losing scrollers before they ever get to see the good part. Build the right video for the job it has to do, then build the other one too.
