AI Tools Every Indie Hacker Should Use

A year ago, "building solo" meant stitching together a dozen no-code tools and hoping nothing broke between them. That's changed. A handful of AI tools now cover most of what an indie hacker needs - building the product, getting paid, automating the repetitive parts, and launching - often for under $20 a month before any revenue comes in.

This isn't a list of every tool with "AI" in its name. It's the stack that keeps showing up across real solo-founder case studies in 2026, organized by the job each tool actually does rather than by category buzzwords.

Building the Product

Lovable

Lovable is where most solo founders now start. You describe your app in natural language and it generates a working React frontend with a functioning backend, often with Supabase wired in automatically for authentication and data storage - enough to show real users something working within hours, not weeks.

Cursor

Cursor tends to be the next step once a project outgrows a pure no-code start. It's an AI-powered code editor that gives you full control of the codebase while still letting AI write most of it, with a Composer feature that implements a plain-English feature request across multiple files at once.

Supabase

Supabase covers the backend most solo apps need - auth, a Postgres database, and storage - without requiring a dedicated backend engineer. It's consistently the default pairing with Lovable and Cursor rather than a separate decision founders make on their own.

Across recent case studies, the actual build split runs roughly 60% traditional coding (Next.js, Rails) and 40% AI-assisted tools like Lovable and Cursor - a mix that shifted sharply toward AI-assisted building in the last year (SaaSRanger, 2026).

Getting Paid and Running the Business

Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy handles payments and, critically, sales tax compliance across regions - a problem that used to require a lawyer or an accountant before a solo founder could legally charge international customers.

Resend

Resend covers the transactional emails every product needs on day one: welcome messages, password resets, receipts, without building an email pipeline by hand.

Plausible

Plausible provides visitor analytics without the complexity - or the privacy baggage - of a full marketing analytics suite, which matters more once a product has real, if small, traffic to understand.

Notion

Notion functions as the operating system for a one-person business: docs, a lightweight CRM, project tracking, and internal SOPs living in one place instead of scattered across five separate tools.

Put together, this "under $20/month" combination - Lovable or Cursor, Supabase, Lemon Squeezy, Plausible, and Resend - is now a common enough pattern that it shows up repeatedly across public indie-hacker build logs before a product has earned a single dollar (VibeStack, 2026).

Automating the Busywork

n8n

n8n handles the repeatable plumbing - syncing a new signup to a spreadsheet, posting a Slack alert on a failed payment, triggering a welcome email sequence - the kind of glue work that used to eat an afternoon a week and now runs unattended.

Claude

Claude gets used for more than writing code. Solo founders lean on it for product copy, debugging, database schema design, and thinking through architecture decisions before touching an editor - closer to a thinking partner than a single-purpose tool (Built This Week, 2026).

AI skills over more subscriptions

A newer pattern worth watching: rather than adding another monthly SaaS subscription for every workflow, some founders now install a handful of specialized AI "skills" into one agent for a one-time cost, instead of stacking $20-a-month tools for tasks an existing assistant could already handle with the right instructions.

Launching and Marketing Without a Team

Shipping the product is only half the job - a solo founder still has to explain it to strangers on a landing page, a Product Hunt post, or a cold LinkedIn feed, without a marketing team to produce that content.

This is where tools that build directly from what already exists matter more than general-purpose editors. Poko Motion, for instance, turns a repo, PDF, deck, or landing page URL into a launch-ready video without a camera, a script written from scratch, or a video editor on payroll - useful specifically because a solo founder's "source material" is usually the product itself, not a separate marketing brief written after the fact.

Beyond video, editorial backlinks remain one of the highest-ROI channels for indie hackers: MentionAgent's comparison of blogger outreach tools helps solo founders automate finding relevant publications, personalizing pitches, and earning coverage at scale without a marketing team.

The Practical Budget

The economics have shifted in solo founders' favor generally. Free tiers across ChatGPT, Claude, and GitHub Copilot now cover a meaningful share of daily coding and writing needs - a level of capability that would have cost $50-100 a month just two years ago. That shift changes where a founder's actual budget should go: not toward more general-purpose AI subscriptions, but toward the specific jobs free tiers still don't handle - payments, backend infrastructure, and turning a finished product into something people outside your own head can understand in under a minute.

The Takeaway

The indie hacker stack in 2026 isn't bigger than it used to be - it's narrower and more purpose-built. One tool to build, one to get paid, one to automate the boring parts, and one to explain what you made. Anything beyond that is usually a tool solving a problem you don't have yet.
